Joseph Ades. That was his name.
New York City was his playground, his workplace, his stage.

I've been lucky enough to see him once. It was a Sunday, late morning. Last days of August and it was so damn hot.
I was in Union Square Green Market, with a New Yorker and we were looking for a place to eat after a night on a Roof of Brooklyn.
I was just looking everywhere around me, my Minolta around my neck, a Black and White film in it.
And then i saw him. A huge crowd was all around him, so i knew there were something to look at.
He was selling vegetable peelers and i didn't stay long enough to understand why so many people would be interested in carrot peelers...
I've missed the big show, but i caught his eyes and his Humanity.
I took a picture of him, very quickly, because it was hard to get an open window on him.
Right after, i told the New Yorker i was with : "I think i got a very good picture... He just looked at me while i was taking a picture.".. He looked at me maybe 2 seconds, i took my picture, and we left.

This picture is definitely my favorite one. I love this picture for all the beautiful feelings this man carries with him. His beautiful white hair, his fancy suit, his wrinckles, his hands...

That's why, 2 weeks ago, i have decided this picture would be the main one of my next exhibit in 3 weeks now (Feb the 20th). It was obvious.
It was excatly the picture which represents a "slice of Street Action", a piece of "Urban Poetry".

Today, my boss received an e-mail. A woman who had read about my exhibit recognized the man.
I came home and started to make some research.

And then i found it :http://mcbrooklyn.blogspot.com/2007/07/joseph-ades-nycs-most-successful-street.html

The man had been many times in the NEw York Times, Vanity fair, Daily News and so on. He is all over the web, as the most successful streets vendor.... This guy is a legend...
I was so proud and so touched by this discovery and his history.

2 minutes later, i've read it : http://mcbrooklyn.blogspot.com/2009/02/rip-joseph-ades-man-who-made-selling.html
A post posted today on the same blog... annoucing Joseph Ades died last Sunday.
I've learned on the same day about his life and name, and his death....

I couldn't help but crying. And i'm still crying. The Man was the perfect illustration of what i call "Urban Poetry" and why i love big cities. I love big cities for these people who illuminate your day.
Ces personnes qui vous font sourire, qui vous rappelle qu'on n'est pas entoure que de cons. Ces personnes qui sont belles.

The NEw York Times wrote about his life, quite interesting life indeed...

Thank you Joseph Ades.
